Suitcase Design

The Brief

“To create a series of 2D concepts for both hard shell and soft shell suitcases based around the ’blobject’ trend. Panels should be able to be vacuum formed, while also being commercial and thus not reducing the capacity of the case.”

Research and Initial Ideas

The initial scope for the project involved using the 'blobject' trend to create a series of 2D designs for a suitcase.

After creating a mood board and researching the area, a number of initial ideas were created, for both hard shell and soft shell suitcases.

Idea Development and Final Design

Further work to the initial brief was undertaken to progress this project in order to develop ideas in more detail.

The initial development involved exploring the forms further in 3D, funnelling ideas each time.

A final design was then created, utilising ideas from the development stage. A hard shell suitcase with soft front pockets was decided upon, in order to have the protection of a hard shell with convenience of the pockets.

CAD and Rendering

A CAD assembly was created using Creo Parametric in order to further visualise the form and the parts that would be needed. As well as the main aesthetic form, components such as the wheels, handles and securing elements were modelled.

The CAD assembly was then rendered using Keyshot to further understand the aesthetic direction of the suitcase, looking at materials, textures and colour combinations. The yellow continues from the sketching stage as it contrasted the dark grey base colour giving a playfulness that was in accordance with the ‘blobject’ theme while remaining elegant overall.
