Furniture and Lighting Design

The Brief

”Conceptualise a maximum of 3 products (lighting and/ or furniture) which explore organic forms.

Show the thought process and think about the use of materials and production.”

Research and Initial Design

Research for the project primarily involved looking in to key areas in order to provide inspiration. These involved:

  • Exploring organic forms already used in design.

    • Architecture,

    • Furniture,

  • Exploring organic forms in nature,

  • Looking into existing luxury furniture and lighting design.

This then allowed a mind map to be created which, alongside the mood board paved the way for initial ideas to be explored in both 2D and 3D forms.

Development and Final Design

From the initial ideas, 3 concepts were then taken forward and developed further, with more of a focus being put on the details. Here, potential materials and finishes were also being discussed.

After developing the ideas and considering different possibilities for key details and forms, 3 final concepts were chosen, further putting a thought to material choice, finish and potential production method. The sketched ideas were then digitally rendered using Autodesk Sketchbook .

CAD and Rendering

The final three concepts were then modelled and assembled in Creo Parametric to further understand the forms in 3D and how each might be assembled in the real world. The table concept utilises a heavy base to allow the leaf structures to be bolted in while the chair concept utilises a combination of wood hidden wood screws and dowel to join different sections when made from wood (the metal form would likely be welded).

To understand the aesthetics further the assemblies were then rendered in Keyshot.
